What We Believe
Unitarian Universalists believe in a life lived thoughtfully and with care for others. While we do not share dogma or a creed, we share a set of values (Justice, Equity, Transformation, Pluralism, Interdependence, Generosity and Love) and we share a covenant (a declaration of how we will behave with one another, embodying our values). We believe in the strength of small communities, and the possibility of a better world, right here, right now.
At USR we are not bound together by creed or dogma, but by the covenant to which we commit ourselves. A covenant describes how we will treat one another, and how we will attempt to come back together if we misstep or break covenant. This kind of covenant between humans dates back to the early days of American congregationalism. A mutual commitment, it empowers every person to live up to our shared ideals and values.
A vision statement articulates a hope for who we will become in this world we share. While our mission centers all that we do, our vision holds the ideals for what will be.
Each of our foundational documents, mission, vision and covenant, are authored by and established by vote by the congregation itself. They are not set it stone but revisited from time to time to ensure they still reflect the democratic will of our community.
