For over 120 years, the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood has been a vibrant liberal religious congregation where inspiration in the richness of diverse beliefs and the power of community can be found. There are currently over 250 members of the congregation and 80 children and youth registered in the Religious Education program. The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood’s mission statement is: Growing in mind and spirit, We act together as a beacon for justice and love: Transforming self and world.

A Director of Religious Education who will direct and administer the religious education program for families, youth, and children of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, consistent with our Children Youth Religious Education (CYRE) Committee Mission Statement and Unitarian Universalist values.

Full-Time, initially with a 10 or 10 ½ month contract beginning from mid-August or early-September and ending June 30th. 40 hours per week including Sunday morning, flextime negotiated

Conduct professional activities in accordance with the LREDA Code of Professional Practices.

Educational Programs:

  • In cooperation with the CYRE Committee, make decisions regarding appropriate curricula and evaluation of programs
  • Collaborate with the CYRE Committee in recruiting, supporting and recognizing RE volunteers
  • Conduct teacher/advisor orientation and training
  • Support volunteer teachers on a weekly basis – include customizing curriculum lessons to meet the needs of USR facilities and specific classes, children and teachers
  • Oversee RE Assistant in preparation of curriculum materials
  • Act as a resource person for junior and senior high programs (Coming of Age and OWL) and parent programs
  • Encourage total family participation in the cooperative religious education program through personal contacts, projects, and special events
  • Share responsibility with the minister in planning and executing multigenerational services
  • In collaboration with Minister and volunteers, develop and administer adult religious education program

Administration and Operations:

  • Hire and supervise RE Assistant and Floating Teacher
  • Supervise paid Senior Youth Advisor in conjunction with Paramus congregation
  • Supervise volunteer teachers and youth advisors
  • Ensure adherence to USR safety policies as they apply to the RE program, including teacher screening procedures, and serve as a member of the Safe Congregation Response Team
  • Greet, register and follow up with new families
  • Develop and maintain RE resources
  • Participate in newcomer brunches
  • In conjunction with the Board and the CYRE Committee, prepare and administer the CYRE budget


  • Be able to articulate Unitarian Universalist vision for children and adults
  • Communicate the goals and activities of the CYRE program to the congregation
  • Keep informed about congregational activities
  • As requested, attend Board of Trustees meetings
  • Make monthly progress reports to the CYRE committee and the Board of Trustees
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Attend weekly supervision meetings with Minister
  • May choose to participate in committees and task forces as incumbent deems appropriate and in consultation with supervisor

Support to the Congregation:

  • Consult with the Minister on conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and pastoral needs
  • Serve as a member of the Safe Congregation Response Team
  • Maintain membership in Continental LREDA and Metro NY LREDA Chapter, and participate in LREDA meetings and events

Continuing Education/Professional Development:

  • Keep abreast of district and denominational developments important to religious education and attend appropriate workshops and meetings
  • Engage in study related to religious education as permitted in contract

Knowledge and enthusiasm for Unitarian Universalist religious education philosophy and UU curricula, understanding of children’s learning styles and skills, enjoys working with children and youth; highly organized, independent, shows initiative; ease in relating to a wide variety of religious views; ability to recruit and work with volunteers, ability to encourage others; ease at networking; excellent public speaking, administrative and communication skills.

We seek someone who can function as a member of our ministry team and in partnership with our minister. Works with the CYRE Committee, RE Assistant, Youth Advisor, Floating Teacher and Minister.
